Doctors Jobs on Social Work and Care Jobs

Doctors are responsible for the diagnosis, care and treatment of illnesses, infections, diseases and the well-being of people. They may work in a variety of settings such as in hospital or as a family doctor.

Contemporary medicine is both challenging and exciting, with new discoveries making their impact on medical practice, doctors now qualifying will see even more dramatic changes in the future, with the developments of many new techniques, involving not only drugs, but methods arising from research in genetics, electronics, nuclear physics and molecular biology.

There are more than 60 specialties - each is unique but there are many characteristics which are common. You will need to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team in virtually every specialty. Some require particular skills, such as an ability to make decisions in life-threatening situations or confidence with computers. Many require an interest in teaching or research and some require particular manual dexterity

Medical specialties broadly fall into one of the following categories:
• anaesthetics
• general practice
• medicine
• obstetrics and gynaecology
• ophthalmology
• paediatrics
• pathology
• psychiatry
• radiology
• surgery (including dental surgery)

Qualifications Needed:
All medical students in the UK will initially take an undergraduate course leading to a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. Depending upon the university - this will lead to one of the following qualifications - MBBS; MBBS/BSc; MBChB; MBBCh; BMBS - all of which are normally referred to as a "first MB".

Individual university medical schools set their own requirements, which vary between medical school and the course applied for. It is therefore essential that applicants consult the undergraduate prospectuses for the medical schools to which they wish to apply and/or contact the medical schools directly to seek clarification.

There are no formal set age limits for entry to medical school and selection and admission policies are matters for individual institutions to determine. However, medical schools will take account of the length of training (approximately 10 years) in relation to the length of service the candidate could provide.
