Qualified social worker jobs are centred on supporting individuals and families to help them improve the quality of their lives. Social workers need to engage with their clients and develop relationships in order to help them find a solution to their individual problems.

Social work jobs require engaging with clients’ friends and families in addition to working with other professionals and organisations, including the police, local authority departments, schools and the probation service.

Social workers usually specialise in a particular area or age group, whether it’s working with children, young people, within youth work, mental health or learning disabilities. The package of care offered depends on the individual client’s needs.

Social work requirements:
There are various routes to becoming a social worker. A professional qualification in social work is compulsory (degree level), either undergraduate or postgraduate masters level. Approximately 50% of social work jobs focus on young people and their families. Other specialism’s include social work jobs in mental health, learning disabilities, youth offenders, physical disabilities, drug misuse, alcohol dependency, autism, spectrum disorders, elderly care jobs, discharged hospital patients, cancer care patients, clients who require specialist rehabilitation, stroke victims.

The HCPC provides strict codes of practice for social workers and employers, to ensure standards of conduct are professional and regulated. Social workers who do not meet these standards and breach the codes stand the risk of being removed from the social care register.

Social workers are required to meet the HCPC’s five CPD standards:
• Maintain a continuous, up-to-date and accurate record of their CPD activities
• Demonstrate that their CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to current or future practice
• Seek to ensure that their CPD has contributed to the quality of their practice and service delivery
• Seek to ensure that their CPD benefits the service user
• Upon request, present a written profile (which must be their own work and supported by evidence) explaining how they have met the standards of CPD
